Atomistic simulation of SrTiO3(001) surface relaxation

چکیده
The (001) surface relaxation of the cubic perovskite SrTiO3 crystal has been studied using the shell model. The positions of atoms in several surface layers embedded in the electrostatic field of the remainder of the crystal are calculated. We show that Ti4+, Sr2+, and O2− ions in six near-surface layers are displaced differently from their crystalline sites which leads to the creation of so-called surface rumpling, a dipole moment, and an electric field in the near-surface region. Calculated atomic displacements are compared with LEED

First-principles calculations of atomic and electronic structure of SrTiO3 (001) and (011) surfaces
We present and discuss the results of calculations of surface relaxation and rumpling on SrTiO3 (001) and (011) surfaces. We consider both SrO and TiO2 terminations of the (001) surface, and three terminations (Sr, TiO and O) of the polar (011) surface. The calculations are based on hybrid Hartree-Fock and density-functional theory exchange functionals, using Becke’s three-parameter method, com...
متن کاملMultiple time scales in diffraction measurements of diffusive surface relaxation.
We grew SrTiO3 on SrTiO3(001) by pulsed laser deposition, using x-ray scattering to monitor the growth in real time. The time-resolved small-angle scattering exhibits a well-defined length scale associated with the spacing between unit-cell high surface features. This length scale imposes a discrete spectrum of Fourier components and rate constants upon the diffusion equation solution, evident ...
متن کاملAb-initio study of SrTiO3 surfaces
We present rst-principles total-energy calculations of (001) surfaces of SrTiO 3. Both SrO-terminated and TiO 2-terminated surfaces are considered, and the results are compared with previous calculations for BaTiO 3 surfaces. The major diierences are in the details of the relaxed surface structures. Our calculations argue against the existence of a large ferroelectric relaxation in the surface ...
متن کاملSimulating dynamic force microscopy imaging of a NaCl island using non-ideal tips
We use atomistic simulation to study how the contrast pattern in dynamic force microscopy depends on the structure of the tip. Using a NaCl island on the NaCl(001) surface as a template, we consider several different NaCl tip configurations, with and without OH contamination. We find that the most significant changes in images are produced by very soft tips, which demonstrate large relaxations ...
متن کاملIon dynamics at porous alumina surfaces
Anodic porous alumina has broad applications for fabricating self-assembled nanostructures, for which atomistic understanding of ionic transport at pore surfaces is indispensable. Here, molecular-dynamics simulation of amorphous alumina with a cylindrical pore under electric field shows correlated anion (oxygen)-cation (aluminum) transport at the pore surface, as opposed to ordinary drift motio...
